lib Edinburgh film and book events mergeMargaret Atwood and Norman Foster are scheduled to appear in a collaboration that will see them at two of the largest festivals in Edinburgh in order to effectively speak to the audience of the international book festival.

In a joint project, which will be the largest joint project that links two of 12 Edinburgh festivals together, Atwood and Foster will be just a few of the prominent guests that will explore the techniques of both writers and filmmakers.

The events will take place at the Filmhouse cinema buildings, which is also the location of the film festival this year as part of Edinburgh’s city director international book festival.  Nick Barley has been working on developing an event for the past 30 years that has been located within the gardens of Charlotte Square.

Barley announced plans for the first programme this week which will feature over 700 authors including an appearance by Garry Trudeau the Doonesbury cartoonist who will converse with Steve Bell the Guardian cartoonist.  Also appearing will be hairdresser Vidal Sassoon, Poet Seamus Heaney, Joseph Stiglitz, former bishop of Oxford Richard Harris and author Phillip Pullman.

Former chancellor Alistair Darling will also give a speech on the economy and politics since Labour lost the election, and seven top poets from South Africa will be at the event that were unable to attend the London book fair this past May due to the Icelandic Ash cloud.

Atwood will be speaking from a satellite link in Canada and discussing her new novel, The Year of the Flood, and Foster who has designed the Wembley stadium, one of the ‘Ground zero’ buildings in NYC, and the ‘great court’ in Britain, will be on hand to talk about his new biography.
