Government wants to make any book available at any library

lib Government wants to make any book available at any libraryAccording to the outline of a new plan about regarding how library services should be run, library goers should have the right to get any book they like, including editions that are out of print, and free access to all e-books.

The new proposal comes from Margaret Hodge the Culture Minister and includes free internet use and one membership that will allow patrons to access all of England’s libraries.

The review policy sets out to modernize library use and outlines a series of features that are deemed to be ‘core’ values of proper library access so that libraries can meet the new demands of the 21st century.

However, despite advances, at the heart of all changes remains the fact that books should be borrowed free of charge.  However, the paper looks at how libraries can once again grab the attention of patrons in an age where library use is declining via advancements in the digital world.

The document suggests that local authorities should create their own offers for patrons such as a commitment to host events, and stock items such as CDs, DVDs, and new book along with free internet access.  The Government wants to see the improvements made at all libraries by the close of 2010.

It also recommends that local libraries consider partnerships with local businesses and services in the community such as coffee shops and post offices.

Hodge stated that a public library should be the community’s heartbeat and offer it pleasure, support, and knowledge throughout every stage of life.
