Librarians from the oldest library in New York uncovered a surprising historical book thief, none other than the father of the United States, George Washington.
In fact, the librarians found that the very first president of the US borrowed two books in 1789 from the New York Society Library but never returned them. With the fine adjusted for inflation, he would presently owe about £195,000 in library fines for being 220 years late.
The New York Society Library said that it will actively seek out the fine, but if somebody does have the books, they would like them back.
According to Madeleine Morris from the BBC, George Washington did have his faults, which include his poor library record. Back in October of 1789, the president took two books from the Manhattan library, one that was a volume of transcripts from Britain’s House of Commons and a dissertation on international relations.
In fact, the ledger shows that the President was even too lazy to sign his name into the book; instead writing in ‘president’ hastily to show that he had them in his possession. The items were due back the following month, but were not returned.
The books at the moment seem to have vanished from the US so on the balance sheet of how much Washington accomplished, there are two small losses.
